MOREAN MONTHLY – March 2018

A Note from the CEO

Not everything that can be counted, counts. And not everything that counts can be counted.
Albert Einstein

When we crunch the numbers, last year’s level of activity at the Morean was quite impressive: We provided 15,949 hours of arts instruction to 8,315 people – that’s the equivalent of 664 days! These numbers tell me we’re very busy – and although we’re proud of this metric, the most important measure of what we do is the most difficult to quantify.

More difficult to measure are those moments when a young person discovers the artist within him or herself, or when an artist makes an important discovery, or has a breakthrough “Aha!” moment during class or during studio time, or the act of courage that it takes to try something new. These personal moments are the core impact of our work.

We believe the arts transform lives and our community, and we thank you for your belief in our mission and for joining us on that journey.

Cheers,
Michael Killoren

Exhibitions

Flux by Shayna Leib

Shayna Leib: Into the Deep (On view through May 12 at the Chihuly Collection) An artist, diver and underwater photographer, Leib developed a passion for deep water diving. Her attention to detail is exhibited in this show featuring glass works inspired by the underwater world, complimented by her photographic works.

Fresh Squeezed 2: Emerging Artists in Florida (Opening Reception Saturday, March 10, 5pm-9pm. On view through April 27) The purpose of Fresh Squeezed is to encourage, support and celebrate artists who fly under the radar, who haven’t had their big break, whose work may not be typical gallery or museum fare. For Fresh Squeezed, we encourage artists to break boundaries, to think of ways their work can create a dialog in our community, our region, in our wild, wacky, wonderful state. Featured artists: Catherine Gomez, Glenyse Thompson, Jack Fields, Katrina Sarah Miller, Lauren Mitchell and Matthew Cicanese.

PCCA Senior Thesis Exhibitions (On view March 10 through April 27) Featuring Christopher Velez, Nicholas Glenn & Sara David.

Did You Ever See…? Word & Image Arts in Education Partnership (On view through April 15)
Each year, students are challenged to create works of art based on a theme and to incorporate a written statement within the piece.

Florida Heat Surface Presenters’ Exhibit (On view through March 31 at the Morean Center Clay) 5th Annual Florida Heat Surface Workshop Presenters’ Exhibition.
