In honor of National Cupcake Day, The Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest, with 93 entries from all over the Tampa Bay area, was held at the Morean Arts Center on Central Avenue with five judges being employed to determine the best overall cupcake in St. Petersburg.
The best cupcake in St. Petersburg was determined by the panel of five judges that included: Steve Westphal, Mary Jane Park, Dexter Fabian, Toni Lydecker and Gary Mormino. The winning cupcake was made by Alita Kane and Jessica Bebee of Sugardarlings Cones & Cupcakes of New Port Richey. Their entry was called Peanut Butter S’mores. Alita Kane accepted the glass cupcake award that was created in the Morean’s Glass Studio & Hot Shop. “We just made that cupcake for the first time yesterday,” exclaimed Kane.
Honorable mention went to Katelyn Sovocool of Seminole. Her entry was Pucker Up. Steve Westphal, who has been described as a serial restaurateur, stated “I am so impressed with the turnout and I can’t wait to judge next year, and that’s a wrapper!”
There was a People’s Choice component of the event and during the two hour time period the public were invited to cast their vote for the best cupcake with a dollar bill with the proceeds benefitting the Morean’s educational programs and scholarships. The winner of the People’s Choice award for best cupcake was Lori Schmidt of St. Petersburg with an entry called Irish Pubcakes.
“We are all about creative engagement and encouraging people to connect with their artistic impulses. We thought this would be a fun and playful way to bring some of the best cupcake makers together and allow the public to participate in determining who makes the best cupcake in our community,” stated Morean Arts Center executive director Katee Tully.
