Future Plans

Five years ago the Morean Arts Center articulated a vision to bring a permanent installation of Dale Chihuly’s work to St. Petersburg: to enrich the arts community, to promote economic development, and to provide the Morean with sustainable revenue source to help fund operations. This vision will be realized in the very near future. The Chihuly will house the Morean’s permanent collection of Chihuly glass, including many pieces created specifically for the Chihuly; a retail shop featuring Chihuly-branded merchandise; an educational component; and guest services.

In related moves, we will convert the 2,400 square foot clay building at our Central Avenue location into the new Hot Shop with working space for glass artists, comfortable audience seating and viewing areas to watch glass blowing in action. Our clay program will triple in size and be relocated to a newly renovated Seaboard Train Station at 420 22nd Street South, which also houses Highwater Clays and St. Petersburg Clay Company.

Made possible by a generous grant from the Bank of America, we will create the Bank of America Children’s Learning Center at our Central Avenue facility. "Bank of America is honored to partner with this wonderful organization, that not only brings arts education into the lives of children every day, but also serves as an economic engine in our community by attracting visitors to our area," said Bernie Craig, Pinellas County Market President for Bank of America. "By spurring artistic, cultural and economic growth, the Morean Arts Center and Bank of America share the common goal of making our community a better place in which to live, work and raise families." This 1,500 square foot space will be a hands-on learning environment for children of all ages and abilities, aligned with Dale Chihuly’s expressed interest in youth programs.
