St. Petersburg Hosts Outstanding Lineup of Leading Ceramic Artists

Morean Center for Clay prepares for Florida Heat: Surface exhibition

Feb. 13 followed by a 4-day workshop for clay lovers starting Feb. 18

ST. PETERSBURG – As most of the nation shivers this month with storms blasting snow and ice, Morean Center for Clay is gearing up to host eight renowned artists for a very hot exhibition premiere and special workshop. It’s February and that means Florida Heat: Surface is almost here.

Featuring eight of the country’s leading ceramic artists, from Montana to New York and throughout the Midwest, the Florida Heat: Surface exhibition premieres Saturday, Feb. 13, in conjunction with the city’s “Second Saturday ArtWalk.” The exhibition is FREE and runs through March 31. Morean Center for Clay is at 420 22nd Street South.

The renowned artists packing their bags for sunny St. Petersburg are: Jen Allen; Ben Carter; Adam Field; Steven Godfrey; Nick Joerling; Heesoo Lee; Karl Radasch and Deb Schwartzkopf.

“These are some of the best ceramic artists in the world and they are as excited to be coming here to the sunshine as much as we are proud to host them,” says Valerie Scott Knaust, director of Morean Center for Clay. “We are looking forward to an amazing exhibition opening this month, followed days later by a workshop the public can enjoy.”

The Florida Heat: Surface workshop starting on Feb. 18 and running through Feb. 21 is designed for ceramic lovers who may only have one day to attend out of the four-day workshop. “Guests can register for one day or all four days of the workshop,” adds Scott Knaust. “We have a special one-day fee if that is all the time a guest has, and they’ll still get a lot out of the workshop experience.”

The Florida Heat: Surface workshop covers all firing ranges and surface approaches, from glazing and slips to underglaze, decals, scraffito, mishima and more.
