“Exquisite Porch” Premieres Saturday, March 12

porch1In conjunction with the March 12 “Second Saturday ArtWalk” in downtown St. Petersburg, Morean Arts Center hosts an Opening Reception for “Exquisite Porch,” a swampy, creepy-crawly spin on the Surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse.

The Opening Reception is scheduled from 5 PM to 9 PM Saturday, March 12. The Opening Reception and continuing exhibition through May 1 in the Morean Arts Center’s Synovus and Everett galleries are Free to the public.

“Exquisite Porch” focuses on the ground-dwelling wildlife of Florida. Artist, writer and independent curator D. Dominick Lombardi selected artists from the New York City area, while the Morean Arts Center selected artists from Central Florida to play by creating drawings which reference things that go bump in the night.

The resulting work raises awareness of the history of the game, its relevance to contemporary art, and celebrates the fauna of the Sunshine State, says Amanda Cooper, curator of exhibitions at Morean Arts Center.

“I am excited about anything that showcases our local artists on a wider stage, and this exhibition, which combines artists from Central Florida with New York City area artists, does just that,” says Cooper. “We’ll be promoted in publications in the greater New York City area, and my co-curator is working on an article about the exhibition that will run in the Huffington Post. This is a great collaboration with a fresh twist, yet rooted in art historical tradition, and our visitors will be fascinated by the results.”

An added bonus to the “Exquisite Porch” exhibition is work from renowned photographer Jody Fausett, a Georgia-based artist whom Oxford American recently chose as one of the top “New Superstars of Southern Art.”

The “Jody Fausett: Crush Velvet” exhibition is a perfect tie in for guests to enjoy with the simultaneous “Exquisite Porch” exhibition, according to Cooper.

“I’m very thrilled to show the work of Jody Fausett at this time,” says the curator. “I have had my eye on him for years and thought his work, which is surreal in nature, would be a great fit with our Exquisite Porch show.”
