The Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center, is proud to announce the next temporary exhibition set to open on February 12, 2016. John Kiley: Luminosity will feature a variety of works by the Seattle based glass artist.
A native of Seattle, WA, John Kiley has worked with renowned artist, Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra and many others worldwide. Kiley’s use of rich, but translucent hues generates a sense of drama that permeates through all of his sculptures. These powerful artworks engage the space that surrounds them playing with both light and negative space.
Kiley’s inspiration comes directly from a childhood memory of creating a perfectly formed sphere with mud and then cracking it open after drying. He recalls being enamored with it, focusing on the shape, the shadows and the layers inside. “The glass sculptures that I make are an effort to re-create this experience. Openings allow the viewer to peer through the sculptures where distinct separate colored sections are fused together to become one. The fragility of glass allows a tension to exist between viewer, sculpture and sculptor, hopefully creating a sense of concern for objects that may be considered simultaneously strong yet precarious, beautiful yet breakable” states Kiley.
John Kiley: Luminosity will be on view through July 11, 2016 and included with general admission to the Chihuly Collection, open daily.
Each show exhibited at the Chihuly Collection aims to introduce both locals and visitors to other artists working in the medium of glass.
