Celebrate 100 Years of Art in St. Petersburg by Observing and Participating in This Centuries Old Art Form

The Morean Arts Center approaches its 100th Anniversary inviting visitors to observe and participate in the art of blowing glass

St. Petersburg, Fla. – As summer winds down and the weather becomes milder, things are heating up at the Morean Arts Center’s Glass Studio & Hot Shop located at 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, Fla. 33701.

With the countdown to the Chihuly Collection reopening well underway, the Morean’s Glass Studio & Hot Shop invites visitors to see firsthand how beautiful works of glass are created in real time with professional glass blowers educating them on the process.

From gathering the molten glass from the furnace, to working it on the pontil pipe and glory hole, to its final cool down process in the annealing kiln, visitors gain a new appreciation for this art form. View the gaffer blowing glass while the assistant narrates in detail the science behind the glass, the artistic vision guiding the process and the steps involved as the work is being produced.

Looking for a more individualized experience? Try a Personal Glass Experience designed with the novice in mind. This unique one-on-one opportunity in the Hot Shop gives visitors the chance to work with one of our demonstration artists to learn the fundamentals of glass blowing. One of the Morean’s demo team instructors guides the audience member through all necessary steps to make their own blown glass sculpture, paperweight or ornament. The guest will create one hand blown piece of glass art in an experience lasting up to 30 minutes.

In addition, the Hot Shop also offers Ladies Night at the Glass Studio & Hot Shop! The evening begins with an instructional demonstration, after which each participant will have a hands-on experience culminating in one piece of glass per person in the form of a solid sculpted paperweight or a blown-glass ornament.

If you’re looking for something different to do on a Friday night with your significant other, try out Hot Date in the Hot Shop. It follows the same structure as Ladies Night in the Hot Shop except each couple brings home a piece of glass made by both individuals in a joint effort.

Summer hours through September 30 (Open daily the rest of the year): Wednesday-Sunday 12pm-5pm

Live glass blowing demonstrations daily at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.

Personal glass experiences available at 12pm, 12:30pm, 5pm and 5:30pm

No admission is required to visit the store. However, the ticket price of $8.95 per person for demonstrations will only be available for a limited time. Once the Chihuly Collection reopens, there will only be a combination admission at $19.95 for visitors (group rates are available).
