Exercise and dieting are probably the most popular New Year resolutions people make, year after year.  Laudable goals to be sure, but what about your resolve to explore new ideas, develop new skills, and have fun along the way?

Perhaps we can help.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to draw… or paint… or throw a clay pot… or make your own jewelry. Maybe you would like to sharpen your photography skills, or simply find a like-minded group of folks interested in exploring a similar creative pursuit?

As you make your 2018 list of resolutions, make sure that nurturing and discovering the artist within is included.  If you haven’t already signed up, consider taking a class with us. As a community-based organization, our doors are open to everyone. And our talented teaching artists are skilled at sharing their knowledge and expertise – and are beloved by our students.

If you’re already on the path of developing your full artistic potential, congratulations! You might also consider a gift to our scholarship fund to help someone less fortunate discover their full creative potential.

Janet Folsom: Living Life (Opening Reception Saturday, January 13, from 5pm-9pm. On view January 13 through February 23)
An exhibition highlighting what family means to us and the changing definition of the word, artist Janet Folsom uses those closest to her as inspiration for her ongoing body of work.

Bruce Marsh: Figure Drawings (Opening Reception Saturday, January 13, from 5pm-9pm. On view January 13 through February 23)
Award-winning artist Bruce Marsh, known for his detailed, luminous paintings of Florida landscapes, turns his attention to the human figure for this exhibition. These ink and watercolor sketches are a way for the artist to keep his hand and eye sharp.

Drawing Artists Together: Celebrating the Saturday Morning Figure Drawing Session (Opening Reception Saturday, January 13, from 5pm-9pm. On view January 13 through February 23)
The Morean Arts Center has been hosting drawing sessions on Saturdays for at least 35 years, continuing a robust figure drawing tradition that goes back nearly a century in St. Petersburg. The Morean invited all artists who have participated in these sessions to submit one work of art for display. See drawings and paintings in the figurative tradition by many of your favorite local artists as we celebrate the program and its longevity.

Did You Ever See…? Word & Image Arts in Education Partnership (On view through April 15)
Each year, students are challenged to create works of art based on a theme and to incorporate a written statement within the piece.

Florida Heat: Spectra (On view through January 31) International Juried Show featuring wood fired works.

Ethan Stern: Inscribing Surfaces (On view through January 31) Inspired heavily by the heritage of cut crystal, this body of work explores an array of patterns beveled into the surface whose angles refract light into and through the form.

Holiday Break Art Camp for Kids (January Camp: Wednesday-Friday, January 3-5, 2018; Ages 5-10) Children will explore a variety of mediums in both guided and self-guided experiences.

Holiday Break Glass Camp for Teens (January Camp: Wednesday-Friday, January 3-5, 2018; Ages 11-16) Explore glassblowing and fused glass through concentrated instruction from our visual arts faculty. Visit the Chihuly Collection. Watch a glassblowing demonstration in our Hot Shop. Try out new ideas, learn the language of glass and explore various processes.

Art Snap! Can’t commit to a six week class or full day workshop? We get it! Art Snap is designed to let you create a work of art in a short amount of time. New offerings added this month! No experience needed. No major commitments. Fun included.

Friday Night Clay at the Morean Center for Clay (Every Friday night, by registration) Come play in clay, including wheel throwing or hand building for two hours of fun! Every Friday night from 7pm-9pm. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Hot Date in the Hot Shop (Jan. 12, Jan. 16, from 6pm-9pm)  Each couple receives a hands-on experience culminating in one piece of glass (a solid sculpted paperweight or a blown-glass ornament).

Sculpt a Glass Flower at the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop (Jan. 13, Feb. 10, from 6pm-9pm) Watch, learn and participate with your very own sculpted glass flower making experience in the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop! Gather a group of friends and sign up together or register on your own. Limited to 8 people per night, this event runs from 6pm-9pm, with each participant given enough one-on-one time with a professional glass artist to create two glass flowers.

Personal Glass Experience at the Hot Shop Watch, learn and participate with your very own personal glass experience in the Hot Shop! Enjoy seasonal favorites like Blow Your Own Glass Ornament offered through December! Please pre-register.

Ladies Night at the Hot Shop (Jan 5, Jan 19; from 6pm-9pm)  Enjoy an evening with the girls!
