St. Petersburg, FL (November 9, 2019) – On Saturday, November 9, the Morean Arts Center will launch its celebration of 23 Years of Word & Image: Arts in Education with an exhibit of art created by High School students of Pinellas County. The theme is “I Wonder” and the exhibit will be included in the November St. Pete Arts Alliance Second Saturday Artwalk, opening at 5 pm and running until 9 pm.
There will also be a special reception for the student artists and their guests on Saturday, November 16, from 3 to 5 pm. As part of the afternoon reception an awards ceremony will be held at 3:30 pm.
This year, 82 pieces are included in the high school exhibition. The exhibit is used as an exercise in art classes in the county. Teachers are tasked with choosing five submissions to be submitted to the Morean for final selection.
“This High School exhibit is the only category where 3D artwork is allowed in addition to the 2D format, said Amanda Cooper, Curator of Exhibitions at the Morean Arts Center. The work is really interesting and the students created pieces that are very profound and relevant to our times.”
There are four series of Word and Image exhibitions, which are open to the public and funded through the generosity of donors including Hazel Hough, who is being honored in a memorial tribute during this year’s exhibits. The exhibits are organized by the age of artists, beginning with the High School exhibit in November and transitioning to Middle School art in December, and two Elementary School exhibits in January and February.
Historically more than 1,200 individuals attend the openings over the course of the four shows, including local artists and educators who participated in the exhibition during its culmination who now include Word & Image in their own curriculum each year to encourage their students to delve into the world of art.
23 Years of Word & Image is sponsored by the Hough Family Foundation, the Pinellas Community Foundation, and Suncoast Credit Union. The gallery spaces of the Morean Arts Center located at 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, FL are free and open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm Monday thru Saturday, and 12 to 5 pm on Sundays.
