St. Petersburg, FL – (November 29, 2019) Thanksgiving traditionally heralds the holiday shopping season. In recent years, a backlash against Black Friday where big box retailers dominate has spawned several other days designed to focus on small businesses, museum stores, and philanthropy. The Morean Arts Center is hosting several activities over the weekend.

Black Friday Blows – so make a glass ornament or paperweight
Spend time with people you enjoy being with, or make them a gift!
Participants will be guided through the process of using glass-blowing techniques to create their own ornaments or paper weights. The evening begins with an instructional demonstration. Then each participant will have a hands-on experience creating one piece of glass art per person. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
The 3-hour workshop is $85 for the public; $75 for members of the Morean Arts Center.

Small Business Saturday
At the Morean Arts Center holiday shoppers are encouraged to start the day with breakfast or to regroup over brunch at the Banyan Café in the Southwest corner of their building on Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg.
Banyan diners should hold on to their receipts for the day as they will result in a 10% discount in the shops of The Morean Arts Center which is currently featuring the BEHOLD Holiday Show and Sale, the Morean Glass Studio and the Chihuly Collection.
Remember to plan some extra time to watch the glass blowing demonstrations at the Morean Glass Studio $6.25 per person or included in admission to the Chihuly Collection. The galleries of the Morean Arts Center, which are free, also feature glass art created by US Veterans participating in the Art of Valor program, and the Word & Image exhibit of High School student art.
Make the day a family affair as children approximately 5 to 10 years old are guided in making a fabulous one-of-a-kind holiday gift at the “Saturdays at the Morean.” Artist Sherri Lundquist will provide the supplies and instruction for a collage made with oil pastels and watercolor resist. The weekly program is free and parents or guardians who must accompany their children for the art making sessions can plan to drop in on sessions from 10 am to 12:30 pm and from 1 to 3:30 pm. Parents who register their children will also receive a 10% discount at the shops of the Morean Arts Center, Morean Glass Studio, and the Chihuly Collection for Small Business Saturday. The three buildings are across the street from each other and easy to traverse!
The 10% discount is valid for November 30, 2019 and may not be combined with other offered discounts. Discounts do not apply to Chihuly licensed items.

Museum Store Sunday
Museum shoppers are encouraged to start the day with breakfast or to regroup over brunch at the Banyan Café in the Southwest corner of the Morean Arts Center at 719 Central Avenue in downtown St. Petersburg. Banyan diners should hold on to their receipts as they will result in a 10% discount in the shops of the Chihuly Collection, The Morean Arts Center which is currently featuring the BEHOLD Holiday Show and Sale, and the Morean Glass Studio.
Families seeking some holiday fun are encouraged to join the artists at the Morean Center for Clay at 420 22nd St S, St Petersburg FL 33712. From 1 to 3 pm parents and children can drop in and plan to explore the possibilities of clay. Materials are supplied for free. Parents must accompany children. The Morean Center for Clay is also located on the Pinellas Trail so after creating fabulous sculptures and pots and creatures, you and the kids can stretch your legs and explore the trail. Parents who register their children will receive a 10% discount at the shops of the Morean Arts Center, Morean Glass Studio, and the Chihuly Collection for Museum Store Sunday.
The 10% discount is valid for December 1, 2019 and may not be combined with other offered discounts. Discounts do not apply to Chihuly licensed items.
Monday, December 2
Discerning shoppers who want to find the perfect gift while supporting “local makers” and aspiring artists can take advantage of a one-day online sale of Gift Cards valid for classes, hands-on experiences, workshops, gallery shops and even summer camp for children at the Morean Arts Center, Morean Center for Clay, Morean Glass Studio and Chihuly Collection. Purchase $200 in gift cards and pay just $190.
Every person making a gift card purchase on Cyber Monday will also be entered in a drawing to win one of two amazing art prizes.
One prize is a seasonally festive piece of glass art made by artisans at the Morean Glass Studio and curated by Andy Schlauch the Executive Director of the Chihuly Collection. Andy will meet personally with the winner to understand their décor and tastes before selecting their prize.
A second Cyber Monday prize, created by second-generation potter and St. Petersburg artist Matthew Scheimann, will feature his signature atmospheric and wood-fired finishes. His functional art is especially appreciated during the holidays. “The home represents a place for family and friends to gather and enjoy each other’s company. I want my pots to be a part of the conversations and stories that are shared during times of celebration as well as day to day happenings,” said Scheimann. Scheimann is the Clay Studio Artist Program Manager at the Morean Center for Clay.
