About Catherine Mills, Morean Center for Clay, Artist in Residence

Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Catherine Mills received her BFA in ceramics from Louisiana State University in 2019. She primarily pinches functional forms intended to inhabit the daily life of its user. Catherine draws inspiration from second hand stores, her summers spent living outside, the Southern roots in which she grew up. During her time as a student, she participated in the summer work study program at Arrowmont School for Craft, and proceeding her graduation was a short term ASPN resident at Red Lodge Clay Center. Catherine is currently a second year resident artist at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, Fl.

Artist Satement:

My work is informed by moments that touch us, the things we touch, and the interactions within spaces we deem our own. I’m interested in the idea of objects as vessels for memory, emotion, and proof of the lives we choose to live. My infatuation with sentiment and nostalgia drive the imagery and surface on each piece. Repetition within surface, decoration, and form reflect the things I deem necessary in my everyday life and how materials are directly related to the longevity in it. The subject matter of my work is a compilation of the exchanges I have with people close to me, time spent alone, and past times I can’t let go of. Drawings from memory on paper become lines through slip and then a physical form to be used. Where in that process we connect and how that conversation starts is what drives me.
